KOTA KINABALU: Former PKR vice-president Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has quit the party.

Aides said he had submitted his resignation to PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail on Jan 1.

Dr Jeffrey, however, could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

But an aide close to him said the United Borneo Front founder leader felt New Year’s Day was an appropriate time for him to quit the party.

It was the first day of the year, a new beginning, the aide said.

Dr Kitingan had earlier launched the UBF, which he described as a third force and an alternative to the Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat coalitions.

He said it was made up of Sabahans and Sarawakian who wished to regain greater autonomy for the two states as provided for in the 1963 Malaysia Agreement.

He noted that despite having an abundant amount of natural resources, the Malaysian Borneo states remained one the poorest regions in the country.
