Any power tariff revision will consider burden on consumers: PM Najib

PUTRAJAYA: Any revision of the electricity tariff would take into consideration the cost and burden to be borne by the consumers, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

The Prime Minister said although the Government had agreed in principle for a review of the tariff, it did not mean that the charges would go up soon.

He said the Government had to study the matter from all angles before Cabinet made a decision.

"When the Government says that in principle, there should be a tariff revision, it does not mean that we enforce the new rates immediately," he told reporters after representatives of the business community signed a pledge to fight corruption, at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, here Thursday.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui said earlier Thursday that a revision of the electricity tariff had been put on hold for now, but the Government would review the rates when the environment was more conducive.

Chin said the Government had, in principle, agreed that a tariff revision was necessary as costs had gone up and fuel prices had spiralled. - Bernama
