Expressway renamed to honour Chong Eu

GEORGE TOWN: It poured for 45 minutes before the launching of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway road sign in front of the Rapid Penang bus depot near Prangin Street Ghaut here.

The rain turned into a drizzle as Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng launched the road sign, which was the first of 13 to be put up along the 17.84km highway.

“Tun Dr Lim was a towering Malaysian and it is only appropriate to honour him by renaming the expressway which cuts across three major landmarks pioneered by him,” he said.

Dr Lim, who was Penang Chief Minister for 21 years, passed away on Nov 24. Among his great achievements were the Komtar tower, the Penang Bridge and the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.

The renamed expressway stretches from the Prangin Road Ghaut junction to the Batu Maung Road-Jalan Permatang Damar Laut junction encompassing both the Jelutong Expressway and Bayan Lepas Coastal Highway.

The expressway is linked via Prangin Road Ghaut to Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong which is named after Dr Lim’s father.
